Back in August I had the opportunity to work on Season two, episode 3 of Space Dandy. It came out recently and I’m seeing the final cleaned up and colored cuts for the first time!

Here are screenshots of the cuts that I did layout and key animation for. Pretty simple cuts, but I was honored to work with Yuasa and Science Saru in general on this project… I want to thank them for their patience with my difficulty with the timing sheets as well as all the effort they went through to translate back and forth and work with foreign animators.

I wish my Japanese was better, but I hope i can work on more anime in the future! Even if it was very stressful!!!!!!!!!! How intimidating is was was well to have my work judged and corrected by Yuasa himself… but I learned a lot for sure.

I think i missed a one cuts, i did 11 total but if i missed any they were low key… The rest of the episode looks soooo good too everyone is so talented

Around April of last year my friend, Jamie Vickers, encouraged Ben Li and I to apply to animate on Masaaki Yuasa’s “Space Dandy” episode.  Yuasa-san was apparently looking for international animators and posted about it on his Facebook wall.  We turned in our reels and promptly got the gig.

I decided to only take on four shots just to feel it out and to make sure I got it all in on time.

The Carpaccio animation and shadow passes weren’t used in the final cut, but I decided to include them for this post to show what was turned in and approved.  The rest of the drawings I did came through though!  Very exciting to see the final animation all cleaned up, colored and cut together.

Yuasa-san was very open to us using Flash to animate our shots.  The production took the final keys (genga’s), printed them out, retraced onto paper and inbetweened those drawings.  It’s a pretty wild pipeline, but it totally worked.  I am grateful to have experienced working under one of my most favorite directors, Masaaki Yuasa-san.

If granted the opportunity I would like to do more animations for Yuasa-san and other overseas productions in the future.  For now I will continue working on my personal project that I aim to get done before the end of the year.

Incredible concept art sketches created by production designer Ondrej Nekvasil for Bong Joon-Ho’s visionary science fiction film, “Snowpiercer”.

+++

01. Typical view of a cramped, dark, and grimy corridor within the residential areas of the Tail Section.

02. Gilliam’s Tent, located at the very end of the Snowpiercer, as seen on the outside.

03. Living spaces inside the Tail Section intended to mimic the claustrophobic feel of slums in third-world countries.

04. A sketch depicting a violent, blood-soaked scene onboard the train, which was eventually realized in the film as the memorable battle between the Tail Section rebels and the Front Section soldiers at the Yekaterina Bridge and Tunnel.

05. A verdant rendering of the Greenhouse Section, where it marks the first time the Tail Section rebels encounter the vivid colors of the train. Notice a key difference: the old lady in the sketch is reading a book, whereas in the film, she is leisurely doing her knitting by the fountain.

06. Beyond the fountain stand boxes of carefully cultivated and strictly controlled plants, fruits, and vegetables all flourishing within the limited spaces of the Greenhouse Section.

07. Perhaps one of the most beautiful parts of the Snowpiercer that made Yona Minsoo stare in joyous wonder: a floor-to-ceiling wraparound Aquarium Section filled with marine life.
